As we watch the horses make their way to the start at Belmont Park, it is appropriate to remember that Charlottesville horse farms have been home to many champion race horses.  While we do not have a runner in this year’s Triple Crown Races, there has been a Derby Runner from the area in the past.  And we shouldn’t for get that the great Secretariat was born in Virginia, not too far from here.

The gently rolling topography and lush grassy fields provide features that make Central Virginia’s countryside the ideal spot to raise thoroughbred horses.  Just imagine looking across the fields of your Charlottesville horse farm at mares grazing with frolicing foals nearby.

The summer race meet at neaby Colonial Downs begins this week and there will be several representatives from Charlottesville horse farms vying to win on both the flat and over hurdles.  As a matter of fact there are several Charlottesville farms that are home to steeplechase prospects.
